Florianópolis takes up most of Santa Catarina Island, and the distances between beaches are longer than they look on the map. Choosing the right area keeps you off the road and on the sand.
How the island is laid out
- North. Canasvieiras, Jurerê and Ingleses: calmer, warmer water and plenty of places to stay and eat. The area most families choose.
- East. Barra da Lagoa, Praia Mole and Joaquina: open sea, waves and a surf scene, around the Lagoa da Conceição lagoon.
- South. Campeche and the beaches beyond: less built up, with a slower pace.
- Centre. The city itself, by the bridge that links the island to the mainland. Practical for short stays, with no beach within walking distance.
