Salvador, the capital of Bahia, was Brazil's first capital and is the heart of Afro-Brazilian culture. It combines a hilltop historic centre with city beaches on the bay and the ocean.

How the city is laid out

  • Pelourinho. The historic centre: churches, brightly painted colonial houses and music in the street. Best explored on foot during the day.
  • Barra. The lighthouse neighbourhood, with a city beach and seafront promenade. It has the most places to stay by the sea.
  • Rio Vermelho. Bars, restaurants and the city's nightlife.
  • Northern beaches. Towards Itapuã: more open beaches and larger hotels, far from the centre.
